WAIMATE.

THE HOLIDAYS. Not for many years has Waimate presented so deserted an appearance at holiday time as was the case for the first two days of the Easter holidays this year. On Good Friday rain set in early in the morning and continued sufficiently far into the afternoon to keep residents indoors all day, and militated against the usual influx of motoring visitors. The sports, usually held on Easter Saturday, were this year put forward about a month on account of the visit of the American athletes, and there was nothing in the nature of a sporting fixture. Many people took advantage of the fine weather prevailing on Saturday and a large number of motoring parties left for Timaru, Oamaru, and the hydro works, in addition to those who spent the day picnicking at resorts in the district. Kelcy’s Bush, Victoria Park, and Knottingly Park attracted a goodly number of motoring parties, but on account of practically all the places of business being closed, very few of these people were about the town during the day. On Monday the annual football match between Star (Timaru), and Southern (Waimate), will be the chief attraction in the town, whilst the sports in connection with the Hook school j jubilee will be sure to make a strong appeal to those who prefer a day in the country. ODDFELLOWSHIP. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Friendship Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., Bro. W. Sparks, N.G., presided over a good attendance. Correspondence was received from Loyal Makikihi Lodge, enclosing complimentary tickets for their annual ball; and from a member outside the district, asking for information re medical attendance. The sick visitors reported that one member had declared on the funds since last meeting, and one had declared off. The sick members were progressing as well as could be expected. Sick pay amounting to £7/6/8 was passed for payment. The delegates of the United Friendly Society Council reported that the last meeting was not well attended. As no further support was forthcoming for a combined church parade, this was allowed to lapse. The question of disbanding the Council was re-opened after a lapse of six months, and it was decided to carry on while the funds lasted. In the meantime the delegates were to point out to their Lodges the value of the Council, and the desirability of making a small levy on members to meet the expenses. The matter of representation on the Hospital Committee was discussed, and it was decided to call a special meeting to select candidates for nomination. The delegates were thanked for their Support. It was resolved that the delegates move at the special meeting that one candidate be nominated for the Hospital Committee, and that P.P.G.M. Bro. H. J. Dash be proposed for the nomination. Bro. J Riach, the new Deputy-Pro-vincial G.M., thanked the Lodge for the honour shown him in nominating him for the position he now held. Accounts amourfting to £lB/3/6, including a maternity benefit of £6, were passed for payment. ODDFELLOW HONOURED. I A happy function took place at the meeting of the Loyal Morven Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F. on Tuesday, the occasion being the initiation of Mrs and Mis 3 Allnutt, and the seventh son of the same family. As a fitting momento of this unique occasion, Bra. T. Allnutt, senr., who is member of Loyal Ashburton Lodge, was presented with a framed enlargement of the Alllnut family of Oddfellows. Prov. G.M. Bro. F. Bailey, in making the presentation, said that Bro. Allnutt had joined the Manchester Unity in Ashburton in 1883, and sixteen years later he came to reside at Morven. In 1912 he signed the application far a lodge at Morven, and from then he was an enthusiastic supporter of the local Lodge. As his sons grew up they joined the Lodge, and that they took their share of the work was shown by the fact that four of them were Past Grands, one was a Grand Master, and the sixth is the present Noble Grand. It was probably a record to have nine members of a family in one Lodge. Bro. Allnutt had always been willing to do his bit for the Order, and was still a keen Oddfellow. The Lodge had felt a desire to acknowledge in some small way their indebtedness to Bro. Allnutt, and he asked him, an behalf of Loyal Morven Lodge, to accept the gift as a token of their esteem. P.P.G.M.’s Bros. W. Hinch and J. Martin, I.P.P.G.M. Bro. W. Dempsey, Prov. D.G.M. Bro. J. Riach, and P.G

Bro. J. Sullivan, all spoke in eulogistic terms of Bro. Allnutt and his family of Oddfellows. Bro. H. Allnutt, in returning thanks for the presentation, said that the many kind things said and the applause of such a large gathering quite took his breath away. He very much appreciated the kindly feelings which had actuated the brethren in making the presentation, and he was very pleased that his sons had taken a live interest in the Lodge. Mrs Allnutt then hung on the wall of the Lodge room a framed photograph of the family. LADY ODDFELLOWS. Tuesday was a red letter day in the history of Loyal Morven Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0 F., as it was the occasion of the admission of the first lady members. A large attendance of members was presided over by N.G. Bro. H. Allnutt, (junr). The N.G. extended a welcome to visitors from Timaru, Makakihi and Waimate. Five female and two male candidates were initiated into the Order by the officers of the Lodge, assisted by Sister Kelly, of Loyal Timaru, as second conductor. Rep. Prov. G.M. Bro. J. Riach, at the request of the N.G., presented Past Grand Bro. E. Allnutt with an emblematical certificate to mark his term of Grand Master. Bra. J. Riach complimented the recipient on the manner in which he had carried out the duties of his office. Bro. E. Allnutt briefly replied. A question was asked regarding the capitation payable to the dispensary by a member who pays his dues through a sister lodge. The delegate was instructed to bring the matter before the Board It was decided to hold over arrangements for the annual ball until next meeting. In speaking to the good and welfare proposition, I.P.P.G.M. Bro. W. Dempsey introduced the new Pro. G.M., Bro F. Bailey, and Dep. P.G.M., Bra. J. Riach, and congratulated them on their attainment to District Office. P.P.G.M. Bro. J. Martin conveyed the fraternal greetings of Loyal Timaru Lodge. P.P: G.M. Bro. E. Gynes returned thanks on behalf of Loyal Makikihi members and expressed a hope to soon see the initiation of the first lady member into his own Lodge. The visitors and members, totalling sixty, were entertained at supper.
