CLEARING MUDDY WATER
CHLORIDE OF IRON. The best material for clearing muddy water is ferric chloride or chloride of iron. It is' stated that a poung of ferric chloride will clarify about 3000 gallons of water in 24 hours. Ferric chloride was quoted at 3/6 per lb. retail by a firm of which enquiry was made. Alum is also suitable, and was quoted at 1/per lb. for small quantities, and about 6d per lb. for a hundredweight by the same firm. A pound of alum is stated to clarify about 2000 gallons of water in 48 hours. Both alum and ferric chloride should be dissolved in water and the solution applied in a spray iron. It is stated that pound of ferris over the surface of the water to be treated. Ordinary slaked lime is often used for clearing water, but it is much slower in its action than either ferric chloride or alum. If sprinkled over the surface of the water, it will sink to the bottom and carry the mud with it.
