COMPLAINT EXPLODED.

WORKERS AT GERALDINE. LETTER TO MR J. KENNEDY. During the course of the meeting of I the South Canterbury Unemployment Committee, held a fortnight ago in Timaru, the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., referred to some complaints which had been made to him by men sent from Timaru. relative to the conditions under which they had been working. Mr J. Kennedy stated that so far as he knew there had been no complaints, and he was surprised that there should have been anything said conveying this impression. He said that certainly one man’s blankets had got wet, but this was not the fault of the authorities in charge at Geraldine, but was due to a defective tent sent out from Timaru. The matter was remedied as soon as it became known, and then everything went on smoothly. Subsequently Mr Kennedy received the following letter which speaks for itself:— “Dear Sir,—On behalf of the body of Timaru unemployed men who were glad to accept your offer of work in your district, and who have benefited by your consideration, we respectfully wish to tender you our sincerest thanks. We were rather upset at hearing that you were held up to ridicule at the last meeting of the Unemployment Committee at Timaru, and wish to give you our united disapproval of the high-handed tactics used and also to assure you that it was not the opinion of any man in that camp on the evening that 'these horrible tortures were supposed to have been endured Mr Clyde Carr’s informant did not arrive till Tuesday morning, and we doubt if his blankets got wet; if so*he did not say anything about it, but one thing we do know, that he was that pleased to accept your offer of work that he provided his own tent accommodation the following Monday (2nd March). Having been appointed delegates on the unanimous vote of the men, we strongly resent any individual making assertions which he cannot substantiate before laying his complaints before us. As Mr Logan and myself have always received the utmost consideration at your hands, also the kindness of Mr Hayes (Town Clerk), we wish to enter our emphatic protest. We did not accept your offer of a building for conveniences, as we fail to see where it could be placed more privately than the arrangements we have at present. In conclusion, we wish to state that w’e are quite satisfied with the temporary quarters at present, and we feel that if anything required for our future comfort is placed before you we will receive the same consideration as you have given us previously.—We are Sir, yours sincerely, J. A. Mcßride and R. C. Logan, delegates. (The signatures of 19 “Satisfied unemployed’’ are attached.) Thursday between Geraldine and Ashburton. Deails of the play was as follows: GERALDINE v. ALLENTON. Davies, organist at f Temuka Presbyterian Church, ha taken up residence at Geraldine. * COMING EVENTS. Geraldine has a busy fortnight ahead. Included in the attractions is a very of the Humphrey Bishop Musical Comedy Company, which will show in the Town Hall next Saturday. The annual Agricultural and Pastoral Show is another big attraction, and should draw considerable numbers to Winchester on Thursday. Meetings advertised include the annual meeting of the Football Club on Monday night; the annual meeting of the Geraldine and District Cribbage Association on Tuesday night, and the annual meeting of the Golf Cluo on Tuesday, March 31st. “A MAN’S MAN.” “A Man’s Man,’ will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre tonight. William Haines, James Cruze and Josephine Dunn, the trio that pleased theatre-goers in “Excess Baggage” have again charmed anew in “A Man’s Man.” This time they have a story of motion picture life instead of vaudeville—the intensely human story of the people of the picture capital at home. Haihes, as the hero of the new play, is a soda fountain assistant in a shop adjoining a fashionable Hollywood theatre, and Miss Dunn plays a girl who wants to get into the movies. Altogether “A Man’s man,” is a very clever satire on Hollywood—a comedy-drama that reveals William Haines’ dramatic gifts as he has seldom revealed them before, with Josephine Dunn interpreting the feminine element to perfection. There is a good supporting programme. Mr E. Cholerton, representing John R. Proctor’s Ltd., the Premier Opticians of Christchurch, will be making another Professional visit to Geraldine on Wednesday, March 25th, and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel on k that date. ....
