"BALDWIN THE TERRIBLE.”
Turns On Persecutors. SCORE PAID WITH INTEREST. United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Conyrlglit LONDON, March 18. The "Morning Post” says Mr Baldwin is stronger in his leadership as a result of his attack. Moreover, he has retorted upon one of his assailants with a talent for invective which the world never suspected in so meek a man. The "Daily Telegraph” says Mr Baldwin’s performance has no parallel in British political history for a full century. His silence only encouraged his adversaries. Yesterday he paid the score in full. iThe "Daily Herald” comments: "In one hour Mr Baldwin returned with interest seven years’ personal attacks by the Press Barons. It was as ‘Baldwin the Terrible’ that he subdued 3000 cheering people to silence, in a speech without precedent in our generation.” The "News-Chronicle” expresses the opinion that Mr Baldwin’s language was justified as far as the attack of which he complained was concerned, but questions whether such action as the speech will promote the decencies of public life.
