Three hundred men, reputed to be Communists, marched on the Treasury, threatening to invade the building. They demanded to see the Minister of Labour because they declined to work for rations. When the mob threatened to become uncontrollable, the police drew their batons, and in the melee several were struck down. Later there was another demonstration outside the Trades Hall. One man struck Sub-Inspector Pugh, knocking him into the gutter. The crowd swarmed in to follow up the advantage, but quickly retired when the police drew their batons. Several arrests were made.
