BAIL REFUSED. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, March 19. John Lewis Gunning (41), taxidriver, was charged at the Police Court that he wilfully set fire to clothing, so situated that he knew the shop in Dominion Road, belonging to William Scott, miller, was likely to catch fire. When counsel applied for bail the police objected, and were about to state the circumstances of the alleged offence, When counsel objected that this would prejudice the accused’s trial. The Magistrate refused bail, but said an application could be made to ihim in chambers.
