WAIMATE RACING CLUB. STRAIGHTCOURSE WINS JUBILEE CUP, The fiftieth race meeting of the Waimate Racing Club, which came into existence by the fusion of the Waimate Steeplechase Club and the Waimate Flat Racing Club, was held yesterday in delightful weather. The attendance, although smaller than that of a year ago, was quite satisfactory, and the totalisator turnover reached £8340/10/-, against £9578/10/- at the 1930 fixture. The drop was not nearly so pronounced as in the case of most clubs which have raced during this season. In a measure this was due to the success of wellbacked horses. The first six events on the card were won by actual favourites, the seventh by a second favourite, and the last race by the third choice. Four winners started at odds-on, and a fifth returned just over even money. Another result of the success of favourites would be an increase in the totalisator fractions, which the Club retains. The track was in excellent condition, and the times were fast all through the day. The starting was good, and the racing was very interesting. A feature of the day was the success achieved by Riccarton horses, which accounted for five of the six flat races. Mr Albert Hoskins, who kept things running smoothly in the secretarial department, has just completed 21 years’ service with the Club, and rode in races at Waimate over 40 years ago. Mr J. E. Henrys, who was present at the meeting, is in his 30th year as handicapper to the Club. Another official with a long association with the Waimate Club is the clerk of the course, Mr W. B. Freeman, whose father acted in a similar capacity at the Club’s inaugural meeting. The Jubilee Cup, the trophy for which was provided by subscription by members of the Club committee, was won by Straightcourse, the first bearer of Sir Charles Clifford’s colours to race at Waimate, and the victory was a highly popular one. The President’s Handicap went to the Riccarton mare Charmeuse, who, like Straightcourse, carried a penalty for a win at Motukarara last week.

After the Cup, the trophy* was formally presented to the winning owner. In congratulating the owner of the winner, Mr E. C. d’Auvergne, president of the Club, said that they were again assembled to see good run in the sport of kings. The occasion was an unique one, being the jubilee of the Club, and everyone would agree that the race was a good one from start to finish, with a happy and popular ending. Mr d’Auvergne then gave a short history of the Club, and called on Mrs d’Auvergne to make an addition to the winning trophies of Sir Charles Clifford by handing him the Cup, which goes with the stake. Mrs d’Auvergne then presented the Cup amidst cheers. In acknowledging the trophy, Sir Charles said it gave him very great pleasure to win so handsome a Cup, especially on the occasion of the Jubilee. Three cheers were then given for the winning owner, trainer, and jockey. The Racing Described. Quinopal, Thorndale and Otauru Lass dropped out of the Studholme High-weight, and in a field of eight, backers displayed a pronounced preference for Giggleswick, who was approximately twice as well backed as Rameses or Owlsflight. Com Queen and Rameses were first to break the line, and le£ into the back from Giggleswick. At the half mile Rameses and Owlsflight were together in the lead from Com Queen and Giggleswick, and at the top Rameses and Owlsflight were three lengths ahead of Giggleswick, with Oriflamb and Com Queen, four lengths further back. Rameses and Owlsflight ran wide at the turn, and Giggleswick got a run on the rails. Finishing strongly, the favourite came through to win by a length and a half from Rabieses, who beat Owlsflight by the same margin. Oriflamb was about three lengths away. Gay Sonnet’s half-brother, Night Recital, who recently changed hands, was made an odds-on favourite for the Trial Plate, showing 629 units, compared with Tea Urn 254, Positive 254 and King Musket 225. Golden Note was left at the post, and Rose Dart began very badly. At the end of a furlong Night Recital had taken charge from Positive, Tea Urn and Miss Warbler, and this quartette and Miss Tembaron were leading the field at the far turn. Night Recital and Positive led to the home turn three lengths ahead of Tea Um and Miss Tembaron, but Positive was stopping when the straight was reached. Night Recital came on to win comfortably by a couple of lengths from Tea Urn, who was a length in front of King Musket. The last-named finished fairly well on the outside, and beat Positive by a length for third money.

An unusually big field of ten contested the Jubilee Cup. Straightcourse, the first horse from the Clifford stable to race at Waimate for 17 years, was the popular choice, finishing up with 567 Investments, followed by Black Duke 413, Minerval 386 and Money Mine 346. Admiral Drake got the worst of the start, from which Glenrowan, Straightcourse. Shortly and High Speed began best. When the stand was reached, Straightcourse had taken charge from Red Racer, High Speed, Glenrowan and Shortly. There was no change in the leading division as they turned into the back, where Money Mine was leading the next bunch. At the five furlongs Straightcourse and Red Racer were a couple of lengths ahead of Glenrowan, with High Speed next, and Black Duke moving up. Straightcourse and Red Racer led round the far turn from Black Duke and Glenrowan, and at the turn into the straight the leaders were Straightcourse, Black Duke, Red Racer, Glenrowan, the quartette being well clear of the rest. Straightcourse had Red Racer beaten a furlong from home, but had to be ridden vigorously to the post to stall off Black Duke, who suffered defeat by only a neck. Red Racer was a length and a half away, a length in advance of Night Effort, who headed Glenrowan right on the line. Money Mine was sixth. Straightcourse shapes as if he would stay fairly well later on. Black Duke ran a good race considering his hurried trip from Trentham, and Red Racer gave another display of consistency without reaping much reI ward. Minerval, who was runner-up | to Straightcourse in the Peninsula Cup last week, never showed up, and was one of the last to finish. The field in the Waitangi Handicap was weakened by the withdrawal of Fair Money, Giggleswick, King Musket and High Speed, and Some Acre was installed the hottest favourite of the day, with Pharaoh in considerably better demand than any of the others. Some Acre was responsible for nearly all the running, taking charge early and leading along the back from Totolomai and Royal Limond. At the top the favourite was well clear of Royal Limond, who had drawn away from Pharaoh, who won by four lengths from Royal Limond, who was five lengths ahead of Pharaoh. Good Gift and Gay Nita were next. Some Acre 1 gave L. J. Ellis his third winning ride i, of the day.

J. Henderson’s bracket. Prince Wrack and Scotty Bingen, was installed favourite in the Morven Trot with 866 tokens, Lord Antrim 610 being next in demand. Onoto and Lady Emmett failed to go away, and Scotty Bingen lost a good deal of ground at the start. Free Logan took charge at the outset, from Ellen Terry and Prince Wrack, with Lord Antrim next. At the stand Free Logan, Lord Antrim and Prince Wrack were several lengths

ahead of Tatsy Nelson, Jacob and Scotty Bingen, the last named having made up a good deal of lost ground. Scotty Bingen broke again Just after reaching the back, but was got moving smartly, and at the far turn she was close behind Free Logan, Lord Antrim, and Prince Wrack. Free Logan led Prince Wrack, Lord Antrim and Scotty Bingen to the home turn, the four being bunched. Lord Antrim broke a furlong from home when throwing out a challenge to the leader, and the mistake settled his chance. Prince Wrack was level with Free Logan a hundred yards from home, but M. Holmes squeezed Scotty Bingen up between the pair, and a great race ended in Scotty Bingen defeating Prince Wrack by a neck, with Free Logan a head away. Lord Antrim was about a length further back. As first and second horses were coupled there was only one dividend. Scotty Bingen had an uneven passage, and it was largely due to Holmes’s skill and daring that she was landed a winner from her stable-mate. Charmeuse was at odds-on for the President’s Handicap, nearly 300 units above Waving Corn. From a walk-up start an excellent despatch was made. Caterpillar, Valuator and Francolin ran in line for a furlong, and at the far turn the order was Caterpillar, Valuator, Francolin, with very little between them. Francolin appeared to be troubled by the turn and dropped back, and half way round the top Caterpillar was joined by Charmeuse. This pair ran to the straight with a good break on the field, and in the run home Charmeuse drew away to win easily by a couple of lengths from Caterpillar. Impertinence was a length and a half away, a length ahead of Francolin. Charmeuse is a brilliant galloper who is likely to win in much more select company. J. Henderson produced another couplet in the Hook Trot in Alpha Bingen and Nelson Guy, but this time Free Logan 617 was favourite, 15 units above the Oamaru pair. Lord Antrim and Free Logan broke at the start, and Black Watch was interfered with. Tat Wrack was first away, but was soon headed by Nelson Guy. Estermoa fell at the end of a furlong, and Alpha Bingen had her gear broken. Nelson Guy led past the stand from Jacob, with Tat Wrack and Onoto ten lengths away. Nelson Guy was half a dozen lengths ahead of Jacob at the back, Tat Wrack following after another gap, but at the far turn Jacob and Free Logan had closed on him, with Tat Wrack still leading the others. Nelson Guy came away again at the top and won easily by half a dozen lengths from Lord Antrim, who finished fast and beat Jacob by a couple of lengths for second place. Tat Wrack was half a length further back. Nelson Guy won easily, but Lord Antrim was very unlucky, as he got a bad passage in the early part.

There were only five starters in the Stewards’ Handicap, the concluding event, and of these four had raced earlier in the day. The f*esh horse was First Raid, who was the best supported runner at the meeting. The Orari gelding was more than three times as well backed as any of the other four, but these were covered by a range of £l2. Waving Com and Francolin were in the van when the turn into the back was made, and they ran past the five furlongs a couple of lengths ahead of the other three, who could not be separated. Going to the far turn Francolin was leading from Waving Com, First Raid and Impertinence, and the positions were the same at the top and to the straight. Francolin held her advantage from First Raid half a furlong from home, but over the final stage was challenged by Night Effort, and the Waimate mare wore the leader down and won by a head. First Raid was a lenfth and a half behind Francolin, with Waving Com and Impertinence together a couple of lengths away. Night Effort had previously finished fourth in the Cup, and she finished well in both races. Details are appended:—

NOTES FROM AWAPUNI. By Telegraph —Press Association PALMERSTON N., March 19. A cold easterly made matters uncomfortable for training operations at Awapuni this morning, but the tracks were hard and fast. The majority of the candidates worked on the plough, which had plenty of dirt on top, although the course proper was also in use, the flags being wide out. Work on the plougn included the fallowing: Fythia and Wailaruh were associated over seven iurlongs, the former drawing away in the straight to run the distance in lmin 35sec. Pahu, alone, ran a mile in lmin 47i . c ec. The Warplane gelding may be better for a race.

Red Fuchsia was going better than Llyn Du, at the end of five furlongs run in lmin 6 3-ssec. Both were carrying big poundage. Keddar left six furlongs behind in lmin 225c3.

After running the first furlong in If sec, Blue Ft. per ran five furlongs in lmin 6sec without being unduly taxed. A bad jump-off gave Llandudno a big advantage over Otairi, and the former was still clear a: the end of «ix furlongs, the time being lmin 20 3-5 sec. Lady Quex broke 38sec in running three furlongs. Warzone and Elicit were on terms at the end of seven furlongs run in lmin 38sec. Blacksmith left five furlongs behind in lmin 6sec. Park Acre finished in front of a Star Stream mare at the close of six furlongs run in lmin 25sec. Consent, with his trainer in the saddle, recorded a good effort, running five furlongs in lmin 4isec. Courtesy cantered round prior to running the last three furlongs in 39sec. Chrysology ran half a mile in 52sec. On the course proper La Poupee finished better than Teller, with Chief Cook right up, after tailing behind in the early stages. They ran five furlongs in lmin 4 2-ssec, a smart performance. Toxeuma, unaccompanied, was travelling comfortably at the end of five furlongs, taking lmin ssec. Aspian was too good for Chief Clerk, running five furlongs in lmin 5 3-ssec. Rapallo held the advantage over Prime Moutoa at the close of five furlongs run in lmin 6 l-ssec, but carried a lighter poundage. There was little between Lordlike and Moutoa Treasury at the end of six furlongs run in lmin 19 4-ssec. Spearopa was the only one asked to jump, being sent a round, but his Jumping is still open to improvement. A big team arrived from Trentham yesterday, but few were asked to gallop this morning. Limerick and Laughing Prince were early workers. Nightmarch appeared after breakfast. The three cup horses look in great order. The South Island jockeys A. E. Ellis, L. J. Ellis, D. O'Connor, R. Coveny and A. Eastwood, who were at Trentham on Tuesday, rode at Waimate yesterday, and will return north to-day to fulfil engagements at Awapuni to-morrow.
