TRANS-TASMAN RACE.
MAY START ON SATURDAY. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, March 10. No finality has been reached in the negotiations for the ocecwi yacht race across the Tasman from Auckland to Australia. The owner of the Oimara, Mr Bennell, who is virtually the challenger, stated to-night that a race was practically a certainty, and he was prepared to postpone the start until Saturday. The owner of Teddy, Mr E. Tambs, is very keen to start, and hopes to secure backing by to-morrow, and to accept the challenge. An Auckland yacht, the name of which Is not yet announced, may also start, under command of Lieutenar’ Commander Juler, who came across in the Oimara. Mr Bennell said that as matters stood the boats were competing for the honour and glory of the race, but a suitable trophy might be presented. He had been told that the late Sir Joseph Ward once presented a trophy for a similar race across the Tasman. The trophy, he understood, had never been won, and if. it could be traced now. and the heirs were willing, it would make a fine prize for the winning crew.
