EARTHQUAKE NEWS.
REWARDS FOR VALOUR SUGGESTED. By Telegraph—Press Association HASTINGS, March 10. The Hastings and Napier men and women performed deeds which, had they occurred in the army at the war, would have been cons’dered worthy of the highest decorations and a place among treasured traditions, says a letter written to the local Press by Mr W. A. G. Penlington, principal of the Hastings High School, and an ex-Major of the Rifle Brigade at the Great War, who makes a plea for recognition of valour shown during the earthquake. There were many instances of people r'sking their lives for the sake of others, the letter continues. In some cases they sustained serious injuries in doing so, and in several instances met death. No doubt such cases should be brought to the notice of the Royal Humane Society. The Mayor of Hastings has asked Mr Penlington to supervise the compilation of records of the sort of heroism referred to. AIR SERVICE ARRANGED. By Telegraph—Press Association GISBORNE, March 10. Consequent on the difficulties of road communication between Gisborne and Napier, and the prospect of this town being completely isolated during the winter, a local company with two ’planes has established an air service. The first flights are be’ng made to-day.
