FIRE BRIGADES.
ANNUAL CONFERENCE OPENS. By Telegraph—Press Association NELSON, March 9. The fifty-second - annual conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association opened to-day. The president (Superintendent P. Deere, of Greymouth), expressed sympathy with Hawke’s Bay earthquake sufferers. The annual report stated that 138 Brigades were now affiliated. The retirement of Inspector Hugo was noted with extreme regret, and a warm tribute was paid to his efforts. The formation of a New Zealand Institute was the greatest step forward in the history of the brigades, and there was no reason why members should not be able to fill any position in the fire service.
Mr Miller, for the underwriters, expressed appreciation of the year’s work, especially that of the Napier and Hastings brigades. The delegates were accorded a civic reception.
