CITIES BURIED IN SNOW.

Blizzard Sweeps U.S.A. LOSS OF LIFE AND HEAVY DAMAGE. United Press Association—By JCleotrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 9, 7.0 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 8. At Chicago, the citizens, aided by the unemployed, are digging out after a thirty-six hours’ blizzard, which left 13.7 feet of snow, and resulted in the death of seven persons and crippled the city’s activities. Trams and motors will probably be able to move through the cleared spaces to-morrow, but many are marooned in snow drifts, which are as much as twenty feet high. Terrific wind and high waters imperilled traffic on Lake Michigan. The coastguard was unable to aid the struggling ships, due to bad visibility. The city is worried by the danger of fires while the streets are impassable, but the workers are endeavouring to clear the passages for fire engines, as well as the milk trucks and necessary traffic. New York City suffered a million dollars damage and five deaths in a heavy north-east gale. The streets are flooded, radio and light services have been broken, and much damage inflicted on seaside properties by high tides and waves. Many families are unable to leave their homes in Fulton Market district, which is flooded. Homes and buildings on State Island have been wrecked. Small vessels were driven three city blocks from the shore up the main streets.

SNOW STORM IN BRITAIN. SCOTLAND DEEP UNDER WHITE MANTLE. United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 9, 7.15 p.m.) LONDON, March 9. Snow-laden winds swept Britain during the week-end, a fifty-mile gale causing damage along the coast. Edinburgh is deep under snow, and people are ski-ing in the streets. Deer, driven down from the Highlands in search of food, have become tame. At a funeral at Stromness, in the Orkneys, a coffin was drawn on a sledge and the mourners were kneedeep in snow. Two youths, in a motor-boat, gallantly rescued the crew of seventeen of a vessel in the teeth of a blizzard.
