Mr E. G. Kerr left for the south yesterday.

Bro. F. C. Chittock, of Timaru. has been elected Grand President of the Grand Lodge of Canterbury of the United Ancient Order of Druids. The Chief Scout, Lord Baden-Powell. and the Chief Guide, Lady BadenPowell, passed through Timaru en route to Dunedin early yesterday morning.

The Consul-General for the United States, Mr Calvin M. Hitch, arrived by the Monowal. He will replace Mr W. L. Lowrle, who has been transferred to Germany. Mr Hitch was in Switzerland when he received notice to transfer to New Zealand. He formerly spent ten years in England. A cable message from Sydney announces that the Hon. Albert C. Wulls, Leader of the Government In the Legislative Council of New South Wales and Vice-President of the Executive Council, has been appointed Agent-General, in succession of Sir George Fuller, whose term in London has expired. Originally a coalminer, Mr Willis became general secretary of the Australian Coal and Shale Employees' Federation in 1915. He was appointed to the Legislative Council by the Lang administration In 1925. Mr Robert Edward Hayes, financial adviser to the Treasury, whose deaift was reported yesterday was born at Dunedin in 1869. He entered as a cadet in the Postal Department In 1885. He was promoted to head office a few years later, and in 1903 was appointed accountant in the Tourist and Industries Department. Three years later he received the appointment of Reg.strar of Friendly Societies. Mr Hayes was appointed Superintendent of the National Provident Fund in 1910 and Secretary to the Treasury in 1922. At the beginning of last year he was appointed financial adviser to the Treasury.
