MR CLYDE CARR’S ADDRESS.

To the Editor of the " Tlmaru Herald.' Sir, —.will you allow me briefly to reter’to some remarks by Mr Clyde; Carr, M.P., in an address in the Scot- \ tish Hall, as reported in your issue of j the sth inst. He says that on a sheep station not far from Timaru, where 23 000 sheep were shorn, the shepherds were being paid f 1 per week and had to feed their own half a dozen dogs, each to do the boss's work, etc. Now, it la well-known that shepherds get free meat for their dogs on the stations. Does Mr Carr suggest that the employer should wait on the dogs, while the shepherds have a smoke? Mr Carr also says that a farmer wheat-grower in the Geraldine district, has beeh offering stookers 9d per hour and found, instead of the ruling rate. Will Mr Carr give your readers the names and addresses of “those petty tyrants’’ (his own term), that we may be able to verify the statement? I presume that even Mr Carr will admit that all men are not of equal value, say as ministers of religion, or Members of Parliament, or any other calling, so perhaps those even at 9d per hour were the dearest men on the job. I would like, sir, to point out that farmers, in common with other private employers, must balance their income and expenditure, or go out of business, which a good many have had to do. They are not in the fortunate position of being able to dip into the Consolidated Fund, and help themselves to a £IOO a year extra to make up the leeway.—l am, COUNTRY WORKER.
