“OFFICIAL” STREET NAMES.
To the Editor of the “ Timaru Herald.” Sir,—l was interested to read in your columns a few days ago that the Timaru Borough Council had decided to notify an inquirer that a certain street was officially known as ‘‘Banks Street.” It would be interesting to learn on what authority this official pronouncement was based. Residents who have lived in the street for more than fifty years have always known it as Bank Street. Will the Borough authorities give an “official” ruling on the name of another street? On a plate affixed to a telegraph pole is printed “Canon Street.” On a building about six feet away is another plate bearing the name “Cannon Street.” Cannon Street it has been for half-a-century. Has officialdom decided on another change here also?
A few days ago I obtained a ’bus timetable issued by the Borough Council. At the tap of one section of ’bus times appears the name “Hassall Street.” In an index of routes in another part of the leaflet “Hassell Street” is referred to. On a map of the borough on the back of the sheet we find “Hassal Street.” What pronouncement has the Council to make in this case?—l am, etc., MYSTIFIED. Timaru, March 8.
