SULPHUR DAMAGE.
TOWN WINS CLAIM AGAINST RAILWAYS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright VANCOUVER, March 6. The sum of £70,000 has been assessed by the international commission against the Canadian Pacific railways, the owners of a consolidated smelter, located in the town, in the trial for damage by sulphur fumes in the State of Washington. The damages in this unique case cover ten years. The smelter operates 20 miles from the international boundary, but the fumes drift southward into the United States, and fill the farm valleys, killing vegetation for forty miles square. By the erection of a huge £2,000,000 fertiliser plant, the smelter company will hereafter turn the fumes into a profitable channel.
