TEMUKA.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The annual meeting of the Temuka Women’s Institute was held last week. Miss Ferguson presided. A vote of sympathy was passed with those in the earthquake area, all members standing in silence. The annual report gave a short summary of the Institute’s activities during the eight months it had been in existence. Starting with a membership of about 35, the Institute now had 81 names on its roll. The thanks of the Institute were due to all those who had helped in any way during the past year, and to all who gave demonstrations and addresses. The report and balance-sheet were adapted. The president thanked the committee, secretary and treasurer for their loyal support. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Miss Ferguson (re-elected); vice-pre-sidents, Miss G. Brown, Mrs D. Taylor, and Miss McShane; committee, the president, vice-presidents, and Mesdames Mclnnes, Fraser, Franklin, Bremner, McKeown J. Rooney, Marshall, J. Macaulay A. C. Palmer, and Buzan, Misses Twomey, Ellis, Butler, and Thompson; secretary, Miss Twomey; treasurer, Mrs Franklin. Thirteen new members were elected. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr W B. Sutcliffe for auditing the accounts. The delegates chosen to represent the Institute at the conference at Geraldine on April 15, were Miss Ferguson and Miss Brown. After several musical items had been enjoyed, and afternoon tea handed round, the meeting closed with the singing of “God Save the King.” SCHOOL PICNIC Most unfavourable weather marred the enjoyment anticipated when the Timaru South School and the Bank Street Methodist Sunday School (Timaru), held picnic outings in Temuka on Saturday. The Domain was set down for the holding of races, but a move had to be made to the Drill Hall where a fairly enjoyable time was spent, especially by the children.

RELIEF WAGES. The amount of money paid out by the secretary of the Temuka Unemployed Committee (Miss I. Meek), on Saturday, representing one week’s wages for relief work done in the Temuka Borough, Geraldine County and Temuka Domain was £172/11/-. Last week the amount was £lB3. PERSONAL. Nurse Poultney, of the Christchurch Public Hospital, is spending a holiday with her parents, in King Street. Mrs E. Blackmore, “St. Leonards,” Temuka, is spending a holiday with her daughter, Mrs Roland Smith, Christchurch. Mr R. Lynch, who has been staying at the Crown Hotel, Temuka, left by the north express on Saturday. John R. Procter, the Premier Opticians, of Christchurch, will be visiting Temuka and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel on March 28th.
