ORPHANS’ PICNIC.
ENJOYABLE OUTING. The anual picnic given to the three orphanages in South Canterbury by the South Canterbury Automobile Association and the Motor Garage Proprietors’ Association was held on Saturday. The site chosen this year was Mullen’s Pool, on the Opihi river, near Pleasant Point, but owing to the unfavourable weather conditions prevailing the original programme had to be abandoned, and the children were entertained in the Town Hall at Pleasant Point. A number of games were arranged, and community singing helped to make the party a happy one. Master Charles Herron sang a Maori song, the young singer being heartily applauded.
During the afternoon soft drinks, ice-cream- and oranges were dispensed and were greatly enjoyed by all. Tea was partaken of at 5 o’clock, and at 6 o’clock the children were taken back to their respective homes, armed with a supply of lollies. Prior to the party breaking up, Major Miles (Salvation Army Boys’ Heme), Mr F. S. Shell (St. Saviour’s Orphanage) and Miss A. E. Thornton (Presbyterian Children’s Home) expressed thanks for the splendid outing which had been provided for the children. all three speakers remarking that despite the weather, the children had enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
