A. AND P. SOCIETY. A meeting of the Committee of the Mackenzie County Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held in the Parish Hall. Present—Messrs W. H. Cook (president), H. A. Munro, S. P. Bray, J. Sims, P. M. Larcombe, J. C. Aitken, W. E. Black, W. R. McConnell, W. G. Black, J. Caskey, W. T. Smith, D. Fraser, J. L. McKercher and T. B. Crampton. Apologies were received from Messrs G. Buss, G. Morris, R. A. Grant, L. Mackenzie and A. Mackenzie. The clerk to the Mackenzie County Council wrote advising that the tax on dogs in the County would remain as it was last year. G. and T. Young wrote forwarding a cup donated by Mr B. N. Murray.—A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Murray for his donation. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Tondro for the donation of a champion ribbon in the pony classes. Mr J. Stumbles, Cave, was elected a member of the Society. The following tenders were received for the privileges at the forthcoming show:—Luncheon booth, G. H. Bryant £5 (accepted); licensed booth, G. T. Warden £2l/10/- (accepted); sweets, fruit and soft drinks, Mrs D. H. Doyle £5 (accepted). It was decided that the Womans’ Institute be granted the use of the unused portion of the riding exhibit shed for their display. On the motion of Mr H. A. Munro, seconded by Mr W. E. Black, it was decided to again include in the schedule a class for ponies, 10 hands and under, Mr W. Scott offered a special prize of £1 to be divided amongst the non-prize winners. Some matters in connection with the riding exhibits for the Robert Leitch Cup were discussed. It was suggested that a light rail be fixed along the front of the exhibits, for the purpose of keeping back the public. In the matter of judging, it was decided to fix a scale of points for the various sections of the exhibits. The judging would be done by the judges in the fruit, vegetable, miscellaneous, grain, roots and wool.

On the motion of Mr T. B. Crampton, seconded by Mr D. Fraser, it was decided to ask Mr G. Ridley to be judge and award the points for the best display. Farm produce and field roots—Messrs C. J. Talbot, D. Loomes and W. Gardener. SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Monday. Present—Messrs C. J. Talbot (chairman), J. Crichton, A. Cooper, W. Scott, J. A. Fraser, J. Wyber, R. Manchester. The chairman reported that the annual picnic to Timaru had been a success. The weather was fine, and the attendance of both children and adults was good. Boiling water and milk were supplied by the Timaru Borough Council, to whom thanks were due, and also to all those who had assisted in other ways. A photograph of the original school was presented by Mr J. L. Hamilton.—A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Hamilton and it was decided to have the photo framed and hung in the school. Mr Scott for the visitors for the month reported that the school and grounds were in very good order, several small matters only required attention. The headmaster, Mr R. G. Watson, reported that for the month the average attendance in the primary department was 200, the roll being 215. The average attendance in the secondary department was 33, the roll number being 38. Mr A. Southgate joined the staff as probationary assistant on 2nd February, while Mr Haley commenced relieving duties in the secondary department on 2nd March. Mr Watson recorded the successes of the following pupils in the recent examinations:—Matriculation, Marjorie Bell. Public Service Entrance, etc., Rosa Yates, Edna Wakelin, Nancy Cooper, Ivan Ellis. Junior National Scholarships:—May Macdonald (this pupil being highest in South Canterbury, also won the Barclay Prize; in addition she also won a N.Z.F.C.A. Memorial Scholarship). Senior Free Place on Scholarship, Nancy Cooper. Junior Free Place on Scholarship, John Gillingham. The Visiting Committee, Messrs W. Scott and Crichton visited the school on March 2 and one or two matters were brought before them. The re-organisation of the cookery and woodwork classes worked more satisfactorily from the staff’s point of view, while the completion of the staff will enable greater progress of all school work to be made from now on.

The chairman thought that the results of the examinations were very pleasing, and congratulated the teachers and pupils on the results obtained.

Mr Talbot stated that the School Jubilee Committee had a sum of money in hand, and they wished to erect jubilee memorial gates at the school. —It was decided to accept the offer, subject to the plans and site being approved by the Committee.

Mr Carlton reported that there was still about £lO required before matters in connection with the dental clinic could be gone on with.—The sum of £2 being profit from the sale of tickets at the picnic, was voted to the fund, and it was also decided to consider the matter of having a benefit picture in aid of the funds. Messrs A. Cooper and J. Wyber were appoined visitors for the month. MACKENZIE COUNTY DONATIONS TO EARTHQUAKE FUND.
