Threshing mills have been busy in the Southbridge district during the past week. Averages of up to 70 bushels ale reported. One crop on a Milltown farm threshed out 62 bushels of wheat to the acre. Another crop of wheat on the Homebrook estate promises to go well over 70 bushels to the acre. Barley yields generally are disappointing compared with other years so far, going only 35 to 40 bushels in some cases. Peas also are not yielding up to expectation.

As a result of a particularly dry spell, tomato growers in the Gisborne area are having difficulty in ripening the fruit. The tomatoes reach a certain stage, but in most cases fail to ripen satisfactorily on the stalks. To secuie better results, many growers have been picking the tomatoes and placing them in a dark place to ripen. The crops were late in making headway this summer but a fair amount of fruit appears to be on most of the early plants. The crops are smaller than in a normal season.

A hotel recently erected as a pleasure resort, the Hotel Titirangi, has been forced by dull times to go into liquidation. An extraordinary meeting of shareholders decided that the company could not, by reason of its liabilities, continue in business and that it was advisable to wind up the company. The hotel was officially opened on November 20 last by the Right Hon. J. G. Coates at a ceremony attended by nearly 300 people. It stands on one of the finest situations at Titirangi. No effort was spared to cater for the comfort, of guests, and the furnishing and interioi decoration were earned out on a lavish scale. Suites of rooms with separate bathrooms attached were a special feature, and hot and cold water was laid on to every bedroom. The main room on the ground floor is a spacious tearoom and cabaret.
