RATIONING WORK IN TIMARU.
To the Editor of the “ Timaru Herald.” Sir,—l would like to know when there is going to be a proper system used for rationing the work to the unemployed of Timaru. At present, the first cry one hears at the Labour Department is “How many men with four dependants and over?” These men finish four days’ work and the next day have a card for another four days. Some of them have had four cards for four days each, while men with two dependants have only had two cards for three days each. In other towns the work is rationed out more carefully, and all men get work in their turns, not one lot get all the work. Men register and say they have four or more dependants . when some of them are working. If every man w r ere asked to produce the birth certificates of their children we might find that they have less dependants than they claim. Hoping some abler pen than mine, will take this matter up.—l am, etc., SQUARE DEAL.
