WAIMATE.

ATHLETIC SPORTS CARNIVAL. The Waimate Amateur Athletic Club was favoured with glorious weather for the carnival staged yesterday. The executive, consisting of Mr S. I. Fitch (president), Messrs F. F. Simpson. L. le F. Ensor, J. S. Manchester. A. Johnson, A. Dobbs, L. Lumsden, E. J. Morrison and the honorary secretary (Mr L. J. Collins), made excellent arrangements, with the result that events were got off promptly, and the interest of the public was well sustained. The presence of the visiting Americans added interest to the proceedings, and their performances were keenly watched. In the javelin throw, Rothert won with a throw of 178 feet, which is about 4 feet shorter than his best effort on the New Zealand tour, which was at Gisborne. He threw the discus 144 ft 6*in., which beat the previous Australasian record of 139 ft 2in., by sft 4*in. His figures in the jumps were moderate. Simpson was also in great form. On his first appearance he ran from scratch in the 100 yards short limit handicap, to beat Lumsden on the tape in time equalling the Australasian record of 9 4-ssec. Kiser did not compete at the meeting, but put in an appearance and indulged in several short sprints. In the country Clubs’ championship, Waimate Club won with 54 points, Ashburton being second with 49 points, and South Canterbury third with 42 points. The times in the majority of these events were slow. The following are details of the results:— THREE MILES CHAMPIONSHIP.— F. F. Simpson (the only competitor), completed the distance in the slow time of 19min 53sec. HALF MILE CYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP.—J. Flaherty 1, G. Geddes 2. J. Murray 3. Also started—H. Dempsey and J. P. O’Leary. Flaherty won easily by two lengths, half a length between second and third. Time—lmin 11 100 ’ YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP.—L. Lumsden 1, K. Manchester 2, N. Satterthwaite 3. Won by about two yards, a foot separating second and third. Time—lo 2-ssec. JAVELIN CHAMPIONSHIP AND HANDICAP.—H. Rothert (scr) 178 ft. 1; Wills, 132 ft 4*in., 2; K. Giles, 104 ft 4Jin., 3. Won by half a wheel. Time —2min 25 3-ssec. RELAY CHAMPIONSHIP AND NICOLL CUP.—Waimate (McDonald, Dobbs, Lumsden, Manchester) 1, Ashburton 2. South Canterbury also ran. Won by about 12 yards.
