WAIMATE.

ATHLETIC SPORTS CARNIVAL. The Waimate Amateur Athletic Club was favoured with glorious weather for the carnival staged yesterday. The executive, consisting of Mr S. I. Fitch (president), Messrs F. F. Simpson. L. le F. Ensor, J. S. Manchester. A. Johnson, A. Dobbs, L. Lumsden, E. J. Morrison and the honorary secretary (Mr L. J. Collins), made excellent arrangements, with the result that events were got off promptly, and the interest of the public was well sustained. The presence of the visiting Americans added interest to the proceedings, and their performances were keenly watched. In the javelin throw, Rothert won with a throw of 178 feet, which is about 4 feet shorter than his best effort on the New Zealand tour, which was at Gisborne. He threw the discus 144 ft 6*in., which beat the previous Australasian record of 139 ft 2in., by sft 4*in. His figures in the jumps were moderate. Simpson was also in great form. On his first appearance he ran from scratch in the 100 yards short limit handicap, to beat Lumsden on the tape in time equalling the Australasian record of 9 4-ssec. Kiser did not compete at the meeting, but put in an appearance and indulged in several short sprints.
