FIRE ON KAIMAI.
QUICKLY SUBDUED. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 3. Damage was done by a fire which broke out in an engine-room locker on the Union Company’s collier Kaimai, as it lay berthed at the railway wharf early to-night. The outbreak was discovered by a watchman on board before it had made much headway, and the alarm which he gave broughtJthe Central Fire Brigade to the ship’s side within two minutes. The engine-room is amidships, and leading from it on the starboard side §,ft is a locker for water and other engine-room stores. The fire had probably been smouldering for some time. A Harbour Board watchman on the wharf had a hose connected ready for use by the time the Brigade arrived, but the blaze, which was just beginning to flare up, was put out with a patent extinguisher and a few buckets of water.
The Kaimai is a collier of 1428 tons, and reached Wellington late on Saturday evening from Greymouth. The vessel is lying up on completion of discharge and the crew was paid off on Monday.
