EXPENSIVE OFFICE.
THE LORD MAYOR OF LONDON. Being Lord Mayor of London is one of the most expensive privileges in the world. As the city’s official host, he entertains on a more princely scale, probably, than any prince; and as the "father” of the city he Is expected to be generously benevolent. Sir Phene Neal, the present Lord Mayor, said one who held the office never dreamed of having as much as a farthing left over from the grant of £IO,OOO which goes with it. “Indeed," he said, "most Lord Mayors have spent double that sum. My share of the expenses of Lord Mayor's Day, with its great banquet, alone cost me £2000! And any one of the many other banI quets given by the Lord Mayor costs | fully £6OO. "The ratepayers do not pay a penny towards the Lord Mayor’s expenses,” he added. “The grant comes out of the corporation’s own purse—that is, from the revenue derived from the city’s estates.”
