NEWS AND NOTES.

Mrs J. Ord advertises desirable 10roomed residence for sale or to let. Particulars page 15. Inspection Invited. A public meeting of protest against wage-cutting will be held this evening, in the Scottish Hall, at 8 o’clock. His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Angland), will preside. The Rev. Cyde Carr, , M.P., will explain to tradespeople, workers, public servants and fanners why the Labour Party will fight to a finish such proposals, which, he claims, would increase poverty, debase living standards, and decrease purchasing power. There will be a collection for expenses. A trader recently had occasion to visit one of the railway construction camps at Wharanui, and after transacting business with a group of Maori women there, he set out on the return journey, states the “Marlborough Express." He had proceeded a considerable distance when a conviction that something was amiss with his car began to penetrate his consciousness. At every bend in the road the sound of a shrill squeak came to him from some portion of the vehicle. At 'length he decided to investigate the matter, and on alighting received the shock of his .life, for sitting on the running board, its face beaming with joy, sat a little Maori pickaninny. It had “stowed away” at the camp, and by keeping a firm hold on the door-handle had been fortunately able to remain on board for the four miles traversed. Apparently the “squeaks" were really the laughter of the four-year-old infant at the swinging of the car in traversing the bends. No time was lost in placing the infant in a safer position and returning it to the arms of its anxious mother.

An Appleby (Invercargill) resident on hearing a commotion in the hen run the other morning went out to see what was happening. The gull was fiercely attacking a fowl, its beak playing havoc with the comb of the hen.
