Smith yesterday morning, judgment for plaintiff, by default was entered in the adjourned case in which H. Killoh (Orari), Mr F. J. Smith, claimed from H. Wright (Orari), the sum of £5/10/7. Costs were allowed at 34/6. RAID ON TOMATOES. On a recent night the greenhouses of Mr Furn Smith in Godley Street were burglariously entered and about 100 pounds weight of tomatoes stolen. One of the houses was entered by pulling out the staple and removing the lock, the other by breaking a pane of glass and thus pulling back the boltA Evidently the theft was perpetrated by someone who knew the “run of the ropes,” and the person or persons concerned used a number of Mr Smith’s boxes in which to cart away the spoil. It would appear that the thief paid a visit next door for tools with which to open the doors, as the tool box was found lying wide open. This theft w r as preceded by yet another despicable action when a Temuka grower lost a fine lot of specially selected tomatoes which he was keeping for seed. Both thefts strengthen the statement repeatedly made by responsible citizens, that, for its size, Temuka sees too much of such actions. SAVING STAMPS. Not a few business people in Temuka have started to deliver their accounts by hand now, in order to save the extra postage. At least one local institution also, has resorted to the telephone as a means of notifying members of meetings. VITAL STATISTICS. During February there were ten births and four deaths in Temuka as compared with six births and two deaths in the corresponding months last year. No marriage licenses were issued, as against one last February. FIRE BRIGADE MATTERS. A meeting of the Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Monday evening, Captain J. J. Allfrey presiding. It was decided that 100 feet of hose be taken from each of the reel stations, to make provision for sufficient hose at the main station, when the present hose is drying. It was agreed that the Earthquake Relief Committee be not charged for use of the brigade room for meetings. Several other matters were discussed and referred to a special committee. GENERAL NEWS. While cutting wood at his residence, Watlington Road, Mr A. E. Smith had the misfortune to cut his wrist with an axe. The wound required ten stitches. An endeavour is being made to have a close holiday observed on Thursday, on the occasion of the Temuka District High School picnic to Waimate. Quite a fair sum was netted for the earthquake relief fund at the miniature golf course on the property of Mr S. B. Reid, Allnutt Street. Mr Reid placed the course at the disposal of the committee, and the attendance of the public was very satisfactory. On Saturday twenty-two Guides and three officers of the Temuka Company will travel to Christchurch for the visit of the Chief Scout and Guide (Lord and Lady Baden-Powell). Captain R. Richards will be in charge and will be assisted by Lieutenant M. Topham and Acting-Brown Owl H. Goodman.
