SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL. Glorious weather favoured the annual swimming sports of the Geraldine District High School which were held m the Domain Baths yesterday afternoon. All the events were keenly contested. The sports were controlled by the headmaster (Mr A. F. Barrell), and an energetic staff of assistants, and the P^ e “ sident of the Geraldine Swimming Club (Dr L. C. Mail), assisted in judging the diving. , . Rule, presiding over a big attendance. The N.G. welcomed members of Waitea Rebekah Lodge, who were present, Sister Pulford, N.G., responding on behalf of Waitea Ledge. Correspondence was read and a receipt from Grand Lodge, acknowledging the donation given to the earthquake relief fund was received. One candidate was proposed for membership, and an investigating committee formed. The first nomination of officers was received. The first half of the initiation competition was held, Brothers G. Patrick, G. Waller, J. K. Young, G. Harris, and J. Davis, acting as judges. Arrangements were made to go to Temuka on the following night, to finish the competition. Bro. Evans, D.D.G.M., congratulated the officers on their splendid performance. At the close of the meeting supper Was served, and the judges announced that Temuka was in the lead by a number of points. . GENERAL NEWS. Mushrooms appear to be more plentiful this year than for a number of season’s past, and a number of good baskets are reported. Members of the Timaru High School Board passed through Geraldine yesterday during the course of a visit of inspection of their reserves in the district.

At a meeting of the Geraldine County Council, a petition was received from twenty-six ratepayers protesting against the freehold of any riverbed property being granted to adjoining owners.—lt was decided to discuss the matter further at the next meeting. Petrol tenders were received at a meeting of the Geraldine County Council on Monday, and caused a good deal of discussion before they were finally accepted. The tenders bf Mr Morrison, of Geraldine, anc 1 Dalgety’s, at Temuka, were accepted. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Women’s Institute was held last evening. Unemployed tradesmen were occupied yesterday on cleaning out the large reservoir which supplies the Geraldine Borough with water. A thorough job was made of the cleaning, and the reservoir was given a good white-wash-ing with a concrete wash. John R. Procter, the Premier Opticians, of Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine, and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel, on March 25 th.
