Miss Dorothy Akhurst, Waimate, is on a visit to Dunedin. Mrs Campbell Gillies. Christchurch, Is staying at Beverley House. Mrs P. A. Elworthy, Gordon’s Valley, will judge the exhibits at the autumn flower show on Thursday. Mr R. S. Gilmer, Wellington, who was at The Grand, left for a private residence yesterday. Miss Hilda Biss (Christchurch), who is the guest of Mrs J. C. Turnbull, WaiIti Road, will return home to-day. Miss Marjorie Bowler Wai-iti Road, returned on Monday from a visit to Greymouth. Miss Gladys Manchester, who has been staying with Mrs E. Ziesler, Brans'ombe Street, returned to Waimate yesterday. Mrs George Helmore,. Christchurch, who was staying with Mrs N. A. Rattray, Waimate, is now the guest of Mrs E. P. Chapman, Salisbury.

Mrs E. Bowler, Wai-iti Road, who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs S. d’A. Grut, Waimate, returned home on Monday. Miss Peggy Chapman (Salisbury), Miss Mary Barker (Winchester), MioS Hazel Elmslie (Christchurch), and Miss Norah Lysaght (Woodbury), have returned from a camping expedition to Ben McLeod.

The engagement is announced of Elizabeth Margaret (Dolly), third daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Hyland, “Tawai,” Glenavy, to Philip Traill, N.Z.R. Dunedin, son of Mrs H. O’Donnell, and the late Mr Traill, Dundas Street, Dunedin.

The engagement has just been announced between Lord Riddell’s ward, Mr Derek Ainslie Jackson, and Miss Poppet John. Mr Jackson is one of the twin sons of the late Sir Charles Jackson, and although by no means a poor man, works hard, his particular study at the moment being spectroscopy. He and his brother have a house in Addison road, where their neighbours include Lady Frances Balfour, Mr Lloyd George, and Sir John Simon. Miss Poppet John, elder daughter of Mr Augustus John, the famous artist, is very attractive in a somewhat unusual way, rery tall and slender, is inclined to the unconventional in dress as her father, rnd a good talker. She has a turn for .lit herself, and is one of Mr Johns favourite sitters.

Miss Catherine TscheremissinofT. Who left Sydney for Europe last week, L a native of Russia, who left her Cwn country in 1916. She has been teaching at the Presbyterian Ladies College, Pymble, where she was the senior resident mistress, and taught English and modern history. Miss Tscheremissinoff is an excellent linguist, speaking five languages her own native Russian, French, German, Italian, and English. When she left Russia she spent two years in China in the household of the Consul-General for Russia at Shanghai. Two years later she came to New Zealand, and when she arrived could speak no English. She set herself to learn the language, and within four years had secured her degree of Bachelor of Arts at the Victoria University, Wellington. Mrs Moreton, Cliff Street, entertain- j ed a number of friends on Saturday j evening, the occasion being the 21st | 1 birthday of her daughter Dulcie. Mi s ! Moreton, received her guests wearing* a frock of black crepe de chine; Miss Dulcie Moreton, the guest of honour, wore a model frock of powder blue taffeta, trimmed with old gold lace, and was also the recipient of many beautiful presents.
