CYCLING.

TIMARU CLUB’S RACE. A very successful open race was staged by the Timaru Cycle Club last evening from Maori Hill around the Seadown block. A good field of sixteen faced the starter, and were got away at about 6.30. The roads were not in the best condition, but the time 40min 23sec, gained by Willmott, was fair under the conditions. H. Dodds, a new rider, was very unfortunate, having a spill when riding well. Several riders met the same misfortune, among these being Christie. Others took a wrong turning on the road, but they should have been familiar with the course. The following riders who took the wrong turn would have given the placed men a good deal of trouble, Hall, Parfitt, Depree, Arnst, Bellam, Bennington and Groves. R. Hawke and G. Davie rode well, being unfortunate in being unplaced. The winner turned out to be A. McKay, who won by about a length from I. McDonald, a new rider from Pleasant Point, who rode a good race. R. Baker, also a new boy, rode well to gain third place. W. Willmott secured fastest time, after a good ride on a strange machine. The following were the placlngs:— A. McKay (55min.), 45m. 20s 1 I. McDonald (6|mln,), 46m. 21s, ~ 2 R. Baker (6imin.), 47m. 5s 3 Willmott, fastest time, 23see. Quite a number of the youths intimated their desire to race in the Club’s jiext fixture, which is a Derby race from Maori Hill to Levels and back.
