“Women usually want to know if their hats are on straight, but those wearing the new Paris models will want to be assured that theirs are on crooked,” says the Paris correspondent of the “News-Chronicle.” Some are perched coyly on the side of the head, exposing most of the brow, others have uneven brims wider on one side than on the other, but a crooked line maintained throughout. The majority are being worn at an angle of 45 degrees. A tale is being told of a surprise recently experienced by the members of a dignified household. Among the guests at dinner one evening was a membei of the “new rich.” As the party entereu the dining-room they were startled to see this wealthy man go up to one of the maids and kiss her, exclaiming, “Mary!” The general embarrassmenu was shared by the guest, who, realising the situation, stammered, “I-I’m sorry, but this lass is my cousin.” Yesterday saw tihe commencement of the South Canterbury Croquet Association tournament, which took place on the courts of the Timaru, Aorangi and Highfield Clubs. All the courts were in excellent order and the brilliant sunny weather added greatly to the enjoyment of players and visitors. It is the second tournament of the Association and the proceeds will be devoted to the earthquake fund. Among the 154 entrants are players from Oamaru, Ashburton, Geraldine, Temuka and Methven during the tournment and for the first time Mr George Hart’s championship challenge cup will be played for. The contest has been drawn so that no player in the first round will meet a player from his own district. So far all matches have been keenly contested, and onlookers have witnessed some very fine croquet. The finals will take place at the Aorangi Club courts on Saturday. LATEST VISITORS.
