RESEARCH TUNNEL
PROVIDED IN ENGLAND. British Official Wireless RUGBY, February 5. The National Physical Laboratory at Teddington has had erected a variable density tunnel for the purpose of research. The construction of the tunnel by Messrs John Brown, of Sheffield, marks a distinct advance in the technique to withstand high pressures. The tunnel, which is composed of the largest hollow-rolled steel drums in the world, has withstood a test pressure of 550 tons per square inch. High speed aeronautics and land racing already owe many successes to the results of research in the wind tunnels of the National Physical Laboratory. The chassis and body of the Blue Bird car in which Captain Malcolm Campbell is attacking Major Segrave’s land speed record were subjected to exhaustive tests of this kind. It is anticipated that research in the new tunnel will yield data of great value.
