BOWLING

SOUTH CANTERBURY CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. SINGLES COMPETITION. The South Canterbury Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament was continued yesterday, when a start was made with the singles competition. The entries totalled 54, which was slightly in advance of last year, and competition throughout the day was keen, resulting in a number of close and interesting contests. With such a large number of entries having been accepted, it was necessary to use three greens, those selected being West End, Kia Toa and Ashbury. The weather throughout the day was perfect, and as a result of the warm conditions over the week-end the greens were very fast. When play ceased for the day, three players had not registered a less. They were F. Ufton (Kaikorai), L. Dewar (West End), and J. H. Tonkin (North East Valley). No fewer than eight players had lost one game only. They were: T. Berry (Meadowbank), F. B. Hawkey (Park), B. Kebby (Ashbury), D. Menzies (Ashbury), W. Lane (Ashburton), R. Howarth (Canterbury), J. Adams (Phoenix), and J. Miller (Park). Ufton, Dewar and Tonkin played perfect bowls throughout the day, while good form was also shown by those who suffered one defeat only. To-day’s play should be full of interest, and it would be difficult to forecast the finalists. In the early play there were some surprises, notably the defeat of last year’s singles champion, P. O’Hagan (Ashbury). He lost his first two games, thereby being eliminated. H. E. B. Watson (United), who performed well in the singles, in previous years, also lost two games. Following are yesterday’s results:— WEST END GREEN.
