On some parts of the coast, the 1 warmer the weather the nearer inshore come the sharks. During the scorching forenoon on Sunday a black fin could plainly be seen now and again off New Brighton to the north of the pier. Some of the owners of the fins were evidently on the young side, but one fellow that haunted the off-shore water about four hundred yards north of the pier was obviously a sizable fish. It was just the sweltering sort of day to tempt them inshore. There was a good surf, but by no means rough; in fact, a canoe was launched several .times. The fins never showed up inside the outer line of surf—which is quite in accord with custom. Whether the people in the water saw the fins or not, they paid not the slightest heed to their presence, and several of the stronger swimmers went far outside the last line of breakers. The prevalence of sharks near “The Box,” Waihao mouth, presents a danger to holidaymakers unacquainted with this menace in this locality. The sea near the beach is at present the home of a shoal of these dangerous creatures, and several specimens, over sft in length have recently been caught. Two full-sized man-eating sharks were killed—one on Christmas Day and the other on Boxing Day—while two Christchurch fishermen who are camped on the property of Mr P. Byrne at Morven are known to have I destroyed no fewer than four, two of | which were of the average size mentioned. Several smaller sharks have been seen swimming close to the shore in the same locality. The warm weather appears to have brought sharks inshore, as large numbers are reported from different places along the coast, particularly at New Brighton.
