THE SCHOOLS

UPPER WAITOHI. The annual prize-giving and picnic was held in Pleasant Point Domain on Wednesday, 17th December, when there was a large attendance of children, parents ana friends. The chairman, Mr Crombie, congratulated the teacher (Miss Cruickshank) on the completion of another successful year of school work. He also congratulated the three scholars who had gained their proficiency, and wished them success as they went on to the secondary schools. The chairman then expressed pleasure at having Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., present. Mr Burnett addressed the children, and presented the prizes. He impressed upon the children the great advantages of having a place for everything, and always putting things in their right places. After lunch had been partaken of, sports and games were held, and an enjoyable day was brought to a close with votes of thanks to the Pleasant Point Town Board for the use of the Domain, and to the ladies who had provided abundant refreshments. On Thursday evening the annual prize-giving and break-up ceremony in 1 connection with the Carew School was < held. A large number of parents and friends were present. A much appre- ] ciated programme of musical items and recitations was given by the children. Items were contributed also by the 1 Misses McGuigan. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Miss Watson for her work in the school, and congratulations on the results of the Ashburton gardening competition which the school has won the last two years in the sole charge section. ORARI BRIDGE. A large number of parents and friends were present on the occasion of the annual break-up and distribution of prizes at the Orari Bridge School, and a very enjoyable time was spent.
