Perfect conditions ruled for the concluding day of the Dunedin meeting, and good fields provided some excellent racing. The Waimate gelding Mount Boa scored a surprise victory in the principal event, but the unexpected event of the day was the sensational dividend returned in the concluding event by the Omakau mare Nanette. Her price was considerably longer even than that paid by Tippling in the last race at the October meeting.

The first day winner Amorist 740, was installed favourite for the hurdles, but there was close betting with Hard Prince showing 696 and Antrim Boy 638. When the second hurdle opposite the stand was reached Craigmore and Antrim Boy were just in front of Hard Prince. At the mile Craigmore and Antrim Boy were still in charge, but .a faulty jump sent Craigmore back to third, and Hard Prince led into the back from Antrim Boy. Passing the six furlongs the order was Hard Prince, Antrim Boy, Craigmore, Amorist. Antrim Boy led round the top from Amorist and Hard Prince, and jumped the last fence with a lead of four or five lengths. The Dunedin gelding was never troubled and won by five lengths from Amorist, who beat Membo for second money by a head, with Hard Prince a couple of lengths further back. Clfttemcre fell at the last hurdle. Antrim Boy displayed very marked improvement on his first day’s form, and some of the public expressed audible disapproval. The stewards held an inquiry. but after hearing evidence, accepted the explanation tendered. Betting was well distributed on the AUanton Handicap, the popular selections being Homecoming 666. Sailing jl9iQ/e 520. Killorna-Tippling 482, Ka\«ra 453. Impertinence 414, and Quinos3tel 372. Corn Queen. Quinopal and Wkipknot were nasty at the barrier, and were sent outside the hurdle. Bitractor and Quinopal were first to show, but Homecoming soon assumed command from Kakara. Killorna, Bitraetor and Tippling. Homecoming led round the top from Kakara. Killorna, Tippling and Impertinence, and in the st&lght stalled off challenges from K#kara, Killorna and Corn Queen. Fair Exchange then showed up. and Quinopal commenced a fast run on the out-

side. Finishing very fast, Quinopal got up to beat Homecoming on the post by a neck, with Fair Exchange threequarters of a length away, just in front of Tippling and Corn Queen. With Brodie substituted for the apprentice who rode him on the previous day, Meadow Lark was installed a hot favourite for the Grandstand Handicap, with Rin Tin Tin and Palermo also in very strong demand. Aspiring was soon out in front from Meadow Lark and Silver Paper. The pace was slow, but this did not prevent Rin Tin Tin and Palermo from being apparently outpaced. Aspiring led to the home turn from Meadow Lark, Silver Paper, Money Mine and Waving Corn, but Meadow Lark ran to the front with a furlong to go and won a rather colourless race by nearly two lengths from Aspiring. Waving Corn was threequarters of a length away, a head in front of Silver Paper, with Money Mine next. The form of one or two of the runners is likely to show improvement very soon.

In a field of nine in the St. Andrews Handicap, Compris 1204 and Spoon 967 claimed most admirers. Pink Note caused trouble at the start, and was soon sent outside the rail. From an even despatch Caterpillar was soon out in front from Spoon and Sapient. This was the order at the six furlongs, where Compris and Camisader were some lengths behind the field. At the top Caterpillar was bowling along clear of Spoon and Sapient, who were followed by Pink Note and Charmaine. Caterpillar, under pressure, held her place when challenged by Spoon and Sapient, but Mount Boa came with a 1 brilliant run and catching Caterpillar just before reaching the line, the Waimate gelding won by nearly a length. Sapient was a neck behind Caterpillar, and half a length in front of Spoon, with Camisader very close up. Compris never threatened danger. Mount Boa, whom T. Hobbs had looking exceptionally well, finished full of running. There were 15 starters in the Fern- j hill Handicap, and about half of them i were backed, but the pool was not as I large as might have been expected. Dumblane 659, Night Parade 524, Night Rose 497, Ballance 460, and Jock o’ Hazeldean 360 were in most demand. Solanum was caught in the tape at the start and lost a lot of ground. Night Effort dashed quickly to the front, followed by Night Rose, Appeal and Ballance. Appeal led Night Effort and Ballance into the back, and going to the far turn this trio were attended by Birdwood, Night Rose, Jock o’ Hazeldean, Colonel Crawford and Night Parade. Dumblane was running near the tail of the field. Night Effort and Ballance were first into the straight, with Night Rose handy and Night Parade moving up. Night Parade was driven past Night Effort and Ballance half a furlong from home, and established a lead of a length. He was, i however, almost snapped again on the post by Ballance, whose rider made a late dab and was beaten by only a head. Night Effort was less than a length away, with Solanum, who put up a good performance, Shortly and Palmary next. Fair Weather 1441, Dulen 683, Hula Belle 658, and Last March 593 were the only ones seriously fancied in the Juvenile Handicap, the others having little to recommend them. Hula Belle was quickly out in front, and at the top she was three or four lengths ahead of Last March and Fair Weather. Hula Belle led Fair Weather up the straight, and a furlong from home she was still two lengths clear. Then Fair Weather commenced to overhaul her, and 50 yards from the judge he was on terms. Gradually drawing away, the topweight won by a length and a half, with Dulen a couple of lengths behind Hula Belle. Last March was easing up three lengths back, with the others beaten off. Fair Weather finished full of running, and six furlongs should not trouble him in the autumn.

Seven of the ten runners in the Taieri Handicap were fancied, the highest figures being Circulation 872, First Raid 851, Solmar 612, Glenrowan 572, and El Boa 546. Some Toff (from outside the rail) and El Boa were quickest away, and at the end of two furlongs the order was El Boa, Solmar, Some Toff. Red Boa, Glenrowan, Meprisant. El Boa led Some Toff, Solmar and First Raid into the straight, but her condition gave out at the beginning of the last furlong and Some Toff came on to win by over a length from Solmar, who narrowly defeated First Raid for second money. Circulation (who ran very wide at the home turn), El Boa and Red Boa were next. Some Toff ran out of hack company at Gore in October, and promises to pay his way well in open races. A dozen hacks wound up the meeting in the Farewell Handicap. Al Jolson, Steeton, Fair Money and Mustn’t Miss were entrusted with the great bulk of the pool, three or four of the lightweights being almost completely neglected. The three heaviest-backed runners—Al Jolson, Steeton and Fair Money—finished up in the “pen” owing to misbehaviour, but the two firstnamed got out well. Captivate and Mustn’t Miss led to the far turn from Nanette, and when the home turn was reached the leaders were Captivate, Mustn’t Miss, Al Jolson, Steeton and Nanette. Mustn’t Miss ran nearly off the course, leaving Al Jolson, Steeton

and Captivate together. Then Nanette streaked through on the rails and secured an advantage of a couple of lengths, and ridden hard, held it to the end, winning by a length from Al Jolson, who beat Steeton by a neck. Mustn’t Miss came again against the outside rail and finished fourth, half a length further back. Nanette, who is owned and trained in Central Otago by Con. White (who has Gay Fashion in E. J. Ellis’s stable), carried less than £3O in a last-race pool, and returned a dividend well over the half-century.
