The annual sports meeting of the St. Andrew’s Caledonian Society was held on Saturday at Victoria Park in warm, sunny weather. Although the attendance of the public was perhaps not as large as in previous years, it was not less enthusiastic, keen interest being shown in all the events. Afternoon tea was dispensed by a Ladies’ Committee in a large, airy marquee, and there was also on the grounds an ice-cream and soft-drink stall. The Timaru Highland Pipe Band, under Pipe-Major T. Mo* Leod, was in attendance during the day and added to the enjoyment of the gathering by playing a number of selections. Special mention must be made of the record number of entries for the dancing section, which, although started as soon as the sports commenced, did not finish until long after the final field event had been contested. There were also good entries in the running events, some of the races providing close finishes, and in one case, the 880 yards handicap, the winner recorded the creditable time of 2min lsec. Although there was only a comparatively small field in the cycling events, this section was undoubtedly a centre of interest to specators, who were rewarded by witnessing several closely contested races. The other field events attracted a fair number of entries, the performance of the competitors being well up to standard.

The day’s enjoyment was brought to a close at night by a concert and dance in the St. Andrew’s Hall, at which there was a large attendance. The Hopgood Cup scratch race for boys, was won by J. Kane, a promising young runner. Although there were a number of scratchings in the 100 yards open handicap, the race provided a close finish between A. D. Cameron and L. R. Webb, with J. Smither a short distance behind. A big field lined out for the 880 yards, which provided one of the best races of the day. At half distance the scratch man, A. Annear, had caught up the other runners, the field running in a bunch until near the finishing line, when Annear made an effort to take the lead, but just failed. There were two heats in the 120 yards open handicap the final resulting in G. G. Green winning by a close margin. In the one mile open handicap the scratch men, May, Hillary and Annear, set a smart pace in the last lap, when May and Hillary sprinted for the finishing line together. By a big effort Hillary just managed to break the tap ahead of May who was closely followed by T. Steele, off the 65 yard mark. A. Annear gained first place in the 440 yards, with A. D. Cameron and J. W. Woods equal second. In this race several of the competitors were receiving bumps, J. May being knocked over when within a few yards of the tape. The McCurdy Cup handicap race, of 220 yards for local runners only, was won easily by G. G. Green, who held the lead from the start. In the 880 yards amateur hanicap, the limit man, East, kept his lead, running a steady race to come in an easy winner. In the one mile cycling handicap, the scratch men Ritchie and Hill had too great a handicap to allow them to pick up the limit men, who showed a surprising turn of speed. On the last lap, the winner, H. Turtill came through pedalling strongly to win by a small margin. Hill and Ritchie took their revenge in the two-mile open, when at half-way they were riding with the field, and on the last lap sprinting ahead, Hill just managed to push his wheel over the line first. In the St. Andrew’s Wheel Race, of 1£ miles, the scratch men picked up quickly those in front, although the limit man, Poole was still easily holding his own. Poole proved to be too speedy for the back-markers, and won easily, with Ritchie and Hill, second and third respectively. The following were the results:— Running.
