LONG DISTANCE FLIGHTS.
MATTHEWS STARTS ON RETURN JOURNEY. Uni'sd Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 28, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 28. Only a small knot of people saw Flight Captain Matthews off on his return flight to England to-day. His little De Haviland Puss-Moth, in which he came from England, has been overhauled. He carries a spare propeller and sufficient fuel for eighteen hours’ flying, which is practically two thousand miles cruising range. Flight Captain Matthews expects to hop off from Darwin on Thursday, on his first sea leg of the journey. HILL REACHES SYDNEY. The aiman Hill, who crashed at Timor in October when within sight of accomplishing a record flight from England to Australia, completed his journey when he landed at Mascot on Thursday, unheralded and unsung, Only his wife and a few friends were there to welcome him, and the news of his arrival was unknown publicly.
