BOWLING

CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. RINKS WON BY OAMARU. The Phoenix Club, Oamaru, for the first time for some years, won the rink championship at the South Canterbury Bowling Centre’s annual Christmas tournament, on Saturday. Every member was playing at the top of his form, and their win over a strong Edgeward rink was a popular one. Saturday, which was the third day of the tournament, was ideal, conditions being very warm. Play was confined to the Timaru Green, a start being made at 8 a.m., with the section winners of the rinks, and the section winners of thp pairs. By miu* day the finalists of the rinks had found, but at 6.30, when play in the pairs ceased for the day, the semifinals had not been reached. The remaining matches will be played tomorrow morning, and the final in the afternoon. It was originally intended that the final of the rinks should be played to-morrow, along with the pairs and singles, but owing to the fact that some of the members of the Phoenix rink, who had won their way to the final, had to return to Oamaru in time for business to-day the game was played on Saturday afternoon. There was a large crowd on the green, and they were privileged to witness a good contest. Phoenix started off with a lead of three on the first head, and at the sixth there was only two points between the teams. Oamaru scored five on the seventh head, however, and thereafter scored in seven of the remaining ten heads played. At the conclusion of the match, the President of the Centre (Mr J. Moyes) presented the winners and runners-up with their certificates, and congratulated each rink on the form shown by them throughout the tournament. He expressed the hope that the win of the Phoenix rink would bo an incentive to the club to send a larger number of -inks to next year’s tournament. Mr Moyes also said that conditions throughout the tournament had been ideal, and he hoped that all the visitors had had an enjoyable time. The greens had been in fairly good order, and he thought they would be able to look back with pleasure cn the 1930 tournament. (Applause). Hearty cheers were then given for the winners and runners-up. Mr J. Calder,. skip of the Phoenix rink, and Mr Efford. on behalf of the Edgeware rink acknowledged the president’s remarks, and said that the visitors had Lad a most enjoyable time.
