COLERIDGE STEADY

DIVERSION OP ACHERON. /Special to the CHRISTCHURCH. October 28. The level of Lake Coleridge is still 1659.85 ft.. at which mark it has remained for some days. The Harper flow also shows little alteration; this morning it was 365 cusecs. The rainfall over the week-end was 0.12 of an Inch, in light showers, and the weather this morning was light easterly, and overcast. Work on the diversion of the Acheron river is going ahead steadily, wit habout 80 men engaged. The approach road has been finished, and the excavation work will be finished very soon. Mr F. Langbein, District Engineer, Public Works Department, says that by the construction of a temporary dam. immediately above the site of the permanent one, it is hoped to have the waters of the river flowing into the lake before Christmas.

No decision appears to have been reached yet as to the site of the powerhouse for the Diesel stand-by plant, which is to be installed before next winter. In some quarters it is expected that Addington will be chosen. It is stated that the necessary conditions are a good foundation, an adequate supply of cooling water, proximity to a railway siding for the supply of fuel, and proximity to the main transmission lines. The final decision will be made from Wellington.
