DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND LONDON August 23. Thes death is announced of the Duke of Northumberland. LORD HATHERTON. (Received August 25, 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 25. The death is announced of Lord Hatherton, aged 88. (Edward George Percy Littleton, Lord Hatherton, C.M.G., was born in 1049 He was educated at Eton and l»ter was attached to the Grenadier Guard* During the years 1875-79 he was Military Secretary to the GovernorGeneral of Canada.) PATRICK BROPHY. Widespread regret was felt by a large circle of friends in both North and South Canterbury, at the death of Mr Patrick Brophy, which occurred at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, on 13th inst. Deceased was bom fifty years ago in the Geraldine district, being the third son of the late Mr and Mrs Kyran Brophy, of Pleasant Valley. About thirteen years ago, the late Mr Brophy took up land in the Cheviot district, where he resided until the time of his death. As a young man, he took a keen interest in athletics, and in the wrestling events successfully competed in many of the chief centres of the Dominion. The funeral, which took place at Cheviot, was very largely attended, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Requiem Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Halvey, who officiated at the graveside. Many messages of sympathy and floral tributes were received. The deceased leaves a wife and a family of six children.
