BOUND FOR THE IMPERIAL CONFERENCE

Australia will be represented at the Imperial Conference by the Prime Minister and by the Minister for Markets (Mr Parker Moloney). The Prime Minister of Australia was born at Ballarat, for long one of the world’s richest goldfields, and as a boy he worked in the mines. He first came under notice by contesting Ballarat against the great Alfred Deakin, and in the course of that campaign the present Prime Minister of England (Mr Ramsay McDonald) took the platform for him. They have not met since that day but they have heard one another’s voices. Some months ago, the London-Australia radio telephone service was inaugurated by a conversation between the two Prime Ministers. Mr Scullin is eloquent, sensitive, highly strung, and possesses an enormous capacity for hard work. His journey to the Imperial Conference will be his first trip outside Australia. Slight of stature, he possesses personality and personal charm. He should make an impression at the Conference. Mr Seullin’s colleague, the Minister for Markets (Mr Parker Moloney) began life as a school master. He is a weighty and incisive debater, a remarkably pertinacious and patient type of politician, and a skilful parliamentarian. Although he has been in the Federal Parliament for nearly 20 years, he has never held office before last October. Mr Moloney specialises in primary production questions, and has a vast fund of information on the subject, somewhat coloured however by his political views. Like his leader he is a moderate type of Labour man, with great commonsense and balance.
