“COCK-HEN” EXECUTIONS.
It is particularly fortunate for “cocks-hens” in these days that their “crime” was not committed in 1474. In thzt year (says the “Preston Guardian”) the magistrates of Bale sentenced a cock to be burned at the stake 1 “for the heinous and unnatural crime lof laying an egg.” The execution was | held on a height near the city called j the Kohlenberg, with as great solemi nity as would have been observed in I consigning a heretic to the flames, and j was witnessed by an immense crowd of 1 townsmen and peasants.
