GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS. SLUMP IN POTATOES. By Telegraph—Press Aaseciatloa CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. The potato section of the market still remains the chief centre of interest. This week there has been a further slight easing from the £2/10/a ton on trucks reported on Wednesday. The value to-day is £2/5/- to £2/7/6 on trucks to growers, the lowest figure that has been known in August for many years. Dakotas are no better, and sales were made to-day at 62/6 f.o.b.s.i. The Wingatui, which left from Lyttelton this week, took 2760 sacks from Timaru and 3780 sacks from Lyttelton, making a total of 6540 sacks. The Waipiata is to load at Timaru early next week, and at Lyttelton on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, and it is indicated that both will take large quantities of tubers north. Small seeds, oats, and wheat show little marked animation. Millers are buying occasional lines of next season’s wheat at 5/9 f.0.b., or 5/6 to 5/7 on trucks, according to stations. Fowl wheat is firm at 6/2 f.o.b.s.i.

DUNEDIN WEEK-END REPORT. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, August 22. There is no alteration in the position regarding wheat, and as previously stated, practically all lines are now in millers’ hands. Values for both milling and fowl wheat remain unaltered. The price for Tuscan is on a basis of 6/5 £ f.0.b., sacks extra. ’ This is equivalent to 5/10, sacks extra, on trucks country sidings, with the usual increment for Hunters and Velvet. The nominal value to-day for A Grade Garton oats for shipping is 3/9 per bushel f.0.b., s.i. and 3/8 for B Grade, these prices being equivalent to 3/1 and 3/- on trucks in the country. Inquiries for chaff are still being received from the North Island, but there is little more available than is required for local consumption. The price that is being asked locally for good bright quality for shipping is £7 per ton f.0.b., s.i. Consequent on the sharp drop in shipping values in Canterbury, prices of potatoes have receded to some extent. Sales are exceedingly slow, and the outside price to-day is £4 per ton. There has been a greater quantity available this year than last, so that it is almost certain that there will be a carry-over. Interest in Chewing’s fescue, crested dogstail, and brown top is still being taken by exporters, and these lines have been receiving some attention.
