CHRISTCHURCH CRIMINAL SESSIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. At the Supreme Court, prisoners were sentenced as follows: Edgar Arthur Barberel, for attempting to use a forged withdrawal slip at the Savings Bank, six months imprisonment. Lionel Charles Burke, a salesman, for theft, three charges, twelve months imprisonment. Herbert Ormond Lawrence, for theft of £BO from the Addington Post Office, six months imprisonment. “This man has given no previous trouble.” said the Crown Prosecutor. “The difficulty about the case, however, is that though the offence was unpremeditated, it was a serious one. committed under very serious conditions.” The reports of police and Probation Officer showed that Lawrence was connected with bookmakers. Spencer Linton Sykes (19). for theft of bicycle parts, two years probation. Walter James Wright, for uttering counterfeit coins, one year’s imprisonment. Mr Justice Adams said the crime was most serious, as the defacing of currency struck at the root of all mercantile transactions.

LAND SALESMAN’S THEFT. By Telegraph—Pres« Association CHRISTCHURCH. August 22. In the Supreme Court to-day, Charles Henry Lee Walter was convicted on a charge of having received £IOO on terms requiring him to pay it to John McLeod, and of having failed to do so, thereby committing theft. Walter, acting as a land salesman, received a cheque for £IOO deposit on a sale of McLeod’s property. He cashed the cheque and failed to hand over either the total sum to his principal or the total amount less commission, although frequent applications were made to him for it. Walter was sentenced to imprisonment for eighteen months.
