TECHNICAL COLLEGE

SALE IN AID OF SPORTS FUND. The pupils and teachers of the Timaru Technical School conducted a sale yesterday of goods manufactured at the School. The object was to raise additional funds for sports and recreation activities. The fixture was opened in the afternoon, and continued in the evening, and was well attended by parents and friends of the boys and girls. A fine array of articles included household requisites from the woodwork section, implements and accessories by the engineering classes, needle work by the girls, and sweets, cakes, scones, bread and pastry, by the domestic science branch; all of which found a ready sale. In addition there was produce which had been donated by friends of the school, and this too was much in demand. The display was an excellent illustration of the progress made by the studenio under their instructors, and showed the value of the institution to the young people of Timaru and surrounding districts. Most of the articles on sale were the products of the pupils of the day school. There were samples of the work done by the evening classes, and these like those from the day school were a revelation to those who saw them. During both afternoon and evening the day school pupils entertained those assembled with a fine concert. This comprised solos and concerted items by the choir, recitations, and a sword dance. There was also presented a one-act play entitled “Between the Soup and the Savoury” (Gertrude Jennings) by three girls. The acting was good and the audiences enjoyed it very much indeed. A section of the girls dispensed afternoon tea, which was well patronised. A good return to the fund should be experienced.
