HARRIER CLUB NOTES

NEWS FROM NEAR AND FAR. Methodist Harriers will be the guests of Mrs J. Nelson, Harper Street, from which the club will hold its first annual seven mile club championship and sealed handicap.

Timaru Harriers will be the guests of their club coach, Mr E. Hetherington, at Church Street West.

Presbyterian Harriers will hold their club championship, and will be the guests of Mr Cameron.

Baptist Harriers ai|e to be guests of Mrs F. A. Hopkins, 44 Trafalga Street.

Anglican Harriers will hold their club championship from St. Mary s Hall to Holme Station, and are to be guests of Mr A. S. El worthy.

Last Saturday a number of the local harriers competed in the Canterbury provincial cross-country championship, which was held over a very severe 61 mile course at Cashmere. Some ran as a representative team, and others under their own club colours.

The representative team finished second to the very strong Christchurch Harriers Club, who ran a remarkable good race again, having their four men in the first twelve.

A. D. Park, of the Baptist Club. Christchurch, who won the Canterbury championship, did the fastest time over the Cashmere course, his figures for the distance being 39min. 54 l-ssec. This must be a record.

R. M. Barrer again ran to form, finishing second after a good race. Last year he was third to Barnes and Park. It was unfortunate for him to meet Park on such good form. I feel sure we will hear of him doing well again.

H. G. Watson, who finished third, becomes junior champion. He is sure to do better than this because the Christchurch Harriers have the happy knack of looking well after their young runners.

M. R. Robinson, Presbyterian Harrier, Christchurch, who finished fourth, is another young runner who will improve as time goes on. He was just beaten by Watson for the junior championship.

F. Smith, Methodist, Christchurch, who finished fifth, ran quite as well as I expected him to do. His form and running in the Temuka to Timaru Road Race stamped him as being one of the leading South Island first year runners, and as time goes on with care he will make the best run.

J. D. Pascoe repeated his last year's performance, finishing sixth. He again secured his place in the Canterbury team which will compete in the New Zealand cross-country championships.

G. Broadhead, of the Timaru Anglican Club, again finished seventh, the same position as last year, being beaten by Pascoe for a place in the Canterbury Team two years in succession. (Hard lines.)

The following Timaru runners did quite as well as expected and came in as under: —H. Ward 11, R. Lund 13, J. Eaton 16. These three, with Broadhead, were the team who won second place.

The following is the team chosen to represent Canterbury in the New Zealand Cross-Country Championship, to be held at Wellington on August 30: —A. D. Park, R. M. Barrer, H. G. Watson, M. R. Robinson, L. Smth, J. D. Pascoe. Emergency—G. Broadhead.
