DRIVEN TO THEFT.
SHEEP TAKEN FOR MEAT. By Telegraph—Prea«* Association HAWERA. August 21. Before Justices of the Peace Court to-day. Thomas Edward Bills (27). a labourer, pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence on two charges of sheep-stealing, involving seven animals owned by A. B. Muggeridge and L. R. Hamilton, farmers, of Manutahi. In a confession to the police, following discovery of buried skins, accused said he had secured only casual employment in the last eight months. He had used the sheep as meat for his wife and two children. He would not have committed the thefts if lie had had money for food. Detective Revell told the Court that when he visited accused’s house, he found the family was without money or food, and practically destitute.
