THE TROTTING SPORT. HEAVY COST TO OWNERS. By Telegraph—Preas Association WELLINGTON, August 20. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club, the president, Mr R. A. Armstrong, drew attention to the large contribution to the upkeep of the sport made by owners of trotting horses. During the last season, in round figures, there were some fourteen hundred different horses competing. At a conservative estimate this represented a maintainance cost to owners for the season of some £360,000. This estimate made no allowance for the capital value of the animals, and left out the entirely large number of horses not actually competing that were either in training or being otherwise maintained. The nett amount returned to owners in stakes was in round figures £173.000, including several benefit meetings. It would be seen that owners as a whole in the upkeep of these horses actually competing, had contributed over twice the amount that was available as return by way of stakes. It was necessary that these facts should be made public, as there was an impression abroad, unfortunately fostered by some officials, that owners had all the best of it.
