GERALDINE.

TO-MORROW’S RUGBY MATCH. Considerable interest has beer evinced in the Rugby match to be played to-morrow afternoon between f team representing the Geraldine district and a Mackenzie Sub-Union team. Glover, will commence at 2.45 and after the game the Mackenzie players will be entertained at dinner by the Football Club and a dance by the Hockey Club. GAPES VALLEY. The Gapes’ Valley Women's Institute held a social and dance in the Gapes Valley Hall on Friday. It was the first venture of its kind, and proved an unqualified success, it being the largest crowd that had ever attended anything at Gapes Valley. The hall was artistically decorated with greenery. drapings and Japanese lanterns, and the scene that greeted the eye on entering was a very pleasing one. The programme opened with an orchestral selection by Miss Bell v and party. Then followed a song “A Harbour Night Song,” by Mrs C. G. Hibbs and for an encore she gave Schubert's “Cradle Song,” followed by a violin solo, “Scottish Airs” by Mr Guthrie, two part songs. “Nocturne” and “Because” by Mesdames Mackenzie, Masefield and Hibbs. Next came a pianoforte solo “March Grotesque,” by Miss Paterson, and as an encore number she gave a prelude of Chopins. Four community songs, with Mrs A. Mackenzie at the piano, accompanied by Miss L. Maxwell on the violin, were then sung. The infection spread through the hall, and almost everyone joined in. The next item was a humorous duo, “Catherine Parr” by Miss Henry and Mr Neutze. Following another instrumental item, a song, “Over the Meadow,” by Miss Ashby and for an encore number, “Somewhere a Voice is Calling.” A pianoforte solo, “Sunrise Echoes” was given by Miss Gladys Brenton, then a competition won by Miss Nellie Patrick and Mr Ted Maxwell was held. Last, but not least, a play “The Rest Cure” did credit to the performers, who had organised it at very short notice. The five characters were taken by Mrs Knubley, Miss Le Lievre, Miss Roberts, Miss Blathwayt and Miss Ruth Barker.

Supper followed, and then dancing was held till the early hours of the morning. Thanks were expressed to those who supplied music, Mr and. Mrs Crowe, Mr Cole, Miss Johnson, Mr Roberts and Miss L. Maxwell, Mr Ted Maxwell and Mr Fawdray, and also to Mr C. McKenzie who brought performers out from Geraldine. The accompaniments were played by Mrs A. Mackenzie and Miss Bell. GOLF. On Saturday a stroke competition will be played. Qualifying rounds for the ladies’ and men’s championships will be played in conjunction with the stroke competition. Beckett. WAIHI REBEKAH LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of Waihi Rebekah Lodge was held on Monday evening, Sister R. Waller N.G. presiding over a large attendance. Two accounts were passed for payment. One candidate was initiated into the Rebekah degree. The card night was advanced a week. All business being concluded, the lodge closed in due form, after which supper was served, and ai social evening spent. ENJOYABLE CHRISTCHURCH TRIP. Quite a large number of Geraldine residents and school children joined the special excursion train at Orari yesterday morning and visited the Winter Show at Christchurch. On arrival in Christchurch the school party were provided with morning tea by the Women’s Committee, and the museum and gardens were visited among other places of interest. GENERAL NEWS. ivi.nw weather has been experienced in Geraldine for the past few days, and w r arm overcast conditions were experienced yesterday morning. These gave way to blue sky and sunshine in the afternoon. The Geraldine Hockey Sub-Associa-tion have booked September 4 for their annual tourney and ball. CARNIVAL COMMITTEE There were about a dozen present at a meeting of the Geraldine School and Swimming Club Carnival Committee on Monday evening. Mr A. M. Fyfe presided. It was reported that as a result of the Players’ concert the carnival account would benefit to the extent of £5/17/8. It was decided to pass a vote of thanks to the members of the Players’ Circle. The Concert Committee reported that a date in October had been booked, and concert items were being arranged. It was decided to accept the offer of the Town Hall manager to hold a benefit picture, and the euchre and dance committee reported that they were arranging further functions. It was decided to hold a Paddy’s

Market in October, and that a committee should canvass for produce, cakes, flowers, books, and sweets. The financial statement showed that the carnival account had a credit of £ls/7/8, and the hope was expressed that this would be increased to £75 before the end of September, and £IOO by the end of October. PERSONAL ITEMS. The friends of Mr M. G. Williams, of Geraldine, will regret to learn that he has found it necessary to enter hospital for an operation. Mr W. Hamilton, of Geraldine, has been spending a holiday in Christchurch. Miss Rose Williams has returned to Geraldine from a holiday in Timaru. Messrs John R. Procter, Ltd., the well-known Opticians, of Christchurch, will be visiting Temuka again during September. Appointments can now be made by ringing up the U.F.S. Dispensary (240)
