FANCY DRESS DANCE

WAIMATAITAI JUNIOR PUPILS. BRIGHT SCENE IN BAY HALL. Unqualified success attended the fancy dress dance of the junior pupils of Waimataitai School in the Caroline Bay Hall last night, when some 250 pupils delighted a large attendance with many beautiful and original costumes and exhibitions of dainty dancing. The Committee of the School look to the teachers each year to provide this notable event, for not only does it prove of great value to the school funds, but it affords the children a night of recreation, and parents and friends of the school a great deal of enjoyment. The function was arranged in an excellent manner, the infants and children up to Standard 3 being paraded in two separate groups. There were expressions of genuine admiration on all sides as the little folk marched round the hall to piano , accompaniment, after which they were drafted into different classes to permit of the judges’ inspection. Mrs F. A. Raymond, Miss C. I. Shirtcliff and Messrs R. C. Hurst and W. Ramsay were not envied in their undertaking, as the majority of costumes were of a uniformly high standard, and all were worthy of a prize. The thoroughness of Waimataitai parents was reflected in the appearance of the children, while the marching, discipline and general deportment was a fine tribute to the teachers, who played such a prominent part in the preparatory arrangements. It w r ould be hard to describe the brilliance of the grand parade. Costumes of all hues were represented, effect being added to the scene by the lighting scheme introduced, and the choice decorative arrangements adopted for the hall. The basket, solo and dual dancing was nicely executed, the whole proceedings being characterised by a freshness that is always to be found at children’s functions.

After original, advertising, paper, dainty and humorous costumes had received long consideration, the judges made the following awards: — Original—Ena Bentley (Doll) 1, Myra Shelker (Carnival) 2, Claude Taylor (Old Lady) 3. All children in fancy dress had their names called, and maije their bows to the audience amidst great applause. The big moment of the night, however, was when each child was presented with a box of chocolates. It is doubtful if the headmaster’s order that the chocolates were not to be opened until home was reached, was faithfully carried out. In a brief speech, the headmaster (Mr R. A. Malcolm), who presided, thanked the parents for their cooperation, and the many willing friends for their provision of supper for the children and spectators.
