BOXING.

TIMARU BOXING ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Timaru Boxing Association was held last evening, —Messrs R. Shillito (chairman), J. Dineen, C. Campbell, R. McGlasham, W. W. Best, T. Segar, R. Taylor, G. B. Lamborn, and M. Angland (hon. secretary). The chairman referred to the loss sustained by a member of the Committee (Mr J. Stewart) in the death of his father. On the chairman’s motion, a vote of condolence was passed with Mr Stewart, members standing as a mark of respect. The secretary reported that he had received donations from Messrs T. R. Rhodes and J. F. K. Jamieson. —Messrs Rhodes and Jamieson to be thanked for their generous support. Mr Segar contended that such donations should be placed to the credit of a special fund, for the purpose of purchasing trophies. If such a system was carried out, the donor’s generosity would be more suitably recognised, than if donations were placed in the general account. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs Best and Dineen, that all donations be placed in a special fund for the purchase of trophies. A letter was received from the New Zealand Boxing Council advising that the New Zealand championships would be held at Palmerston North, on 21st., 22nd., and 23rd. August, and asking for nominations. The chairman pointed out that before a decision could be arrived at, the financial position would have to be considered. The secretary stated that the expense of sending a competitor would be £lO. Mr Segar said that every endeavour should be made to have this Association represented. Several of the local champions would, if given the chance, perform very creditably in the champs mships. Mr Best said that sending competitors to the championships would tend to further improve the standard of boxing. If approached, the country centres would, in all probability, give financial assistance. The majority of the representatives would be drawn from outside Timaru. The chairman said that application should be made to the new Council for assistance. It was finally decided, on the motion of Messrs Best and Lamborn, that A. Currie (Temuka), H. Cullimore (Timaru), and J. Spillane (Temuka) be sent to the championships, providing the necessary financial assistance is arranged. The secretary presented the balance sheet covering the recent tourney, which disclosed a very satisfactory credit balance. The chairman complimented the officials and the Committee on the very efficient manner in which they had conducted the tourney. On the motion of Messrs Campbell and Dineen, the balance sheet was adopted. The following competitors were declared South Canterbury champions in their respective classes:— Heav. r -weight.—F. Shimanski (Glenavy). Light-heavy.—J. Connolly (Temuka). Welter.—C. Smith (Timaru). Light.—J. Spiiiane (Temuka). Feather.—A. Currie (Temuka). It was decided that these competitors be given gold medals. The following competitors were awarded silver medals:—W. Weston (Timaru), A. McKay (Timaru), and L. Ennis (Timaru).

The gold medal given for the most scientific boxer was awarded to Roderick (Glenavy).

Accounts amounting to £26/4/- were passed for payment.
